Australian Open Semi-Final Preview

Spanish tennis heros Fernando Verdasco and Rafael Nadal last met at Roland Garros in May 2008. ATP World No. 1 Rafael Nadal meets Spanish compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the Australian Open semi-finals on Friday. ATP stats and information guru Greg Sharko previews the match-up.

SEMI-FINALS PREVIEW – This is the seventh time the two Spaniards are meeting in a Tour level tournament and Nadal has won 13 of the past 14 sets. Nadal, who has yet to drop a set in Melbourne (15-0), is appearing in the Australian Open semi-finals for the second straight year and fifth consecutive time in a Grand Slam tournament. Nadal is attempting to reach his eighth career Grand Slam final (5-2), the first on hard courts. Verdasco is making his first Grand Slam semi-final showing in his 23rd career Slam tournament. This is the fourth all-Spanish semi-final in a Grand Slam in the Open Era and the winner will become the third Spaniard to reach the Australian Open final, joining Carlos Moya in 1997 (l. to Sampras) and Andres Gimeno in 1969 (l. to Laver). Both players have broken their opponents 32 times while Nadal has lost serve six times and Verdasco nine times. Vamos! Rafael Nadal beats Gilles Simon in three sets

World number one Rafael Nadal set up a semi-final showdown with fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco after subduing France's Gilles Simon 6-2 7-5 7-5 at the Australian Open.

Nadal has not dropped a set so far in the tournament, though the sixth-seeded Simon came the closest when he held a set point in the 10th game of the second set while Nadal was serving.

However, the 22-year-old from Mallorca held and then broke Simon in the next game before serving out for the second set. Nadal broke Simon twice in the third set to win the match in two hours 27 minutes.

Nadal's meeting with Verdasco on Friday will be the first time two Spanish men have met in the semi-finals at the Australian Open since the tournament opened its doors to professionals in 1969. (source : eurosport.co.uk)

Nadal easy pass Gonzalez

Top seed Rafael Nadal has eased into the quarterfinals of Australian Open 2009, brushing aside a flat Fernando Gonzalez 6-3 6-2 6-4 late on Monday afternoon.

Quick facts

Nadal had just 11 unforced errors in three sets; Gonzalez had 35

Nadal won 10 of 14 points at the net (71 per cent) compared to Gonzalez’s eight of 18 (44 per cent)

Gonzalez converted on two of seven break point opportunities (29 per cent), while Nadal was 6-for-13 (46 per cent)

Gonzalez served six aces and two double faults, while Nadal had four aces and no double faults.
